GreenGuard GG25-LG XPS Insulation Board - 2"
GG25-LG XPS Insulation Board comprises closed–cell Type IV extruded polystyrene (XPS) with a minimum compressive strength of 25 psi.
Produced with a blowing agent blend for GWP of less than 50. It has high water resistance & an R–value of 5.0 per inch of thickness. It retains its insulating properties over time. Use this insulation for below slab, cavity wall, and foundation applications. Available in a square edge board, ship–lap edge board, pre-cut 16-inch-wide board, and a score board.
Common Applications
🧱 1. Below-slab insulation (one of the biggest uses)
- Under concrete slabs (residential + commercial)
- Garage floors, warehouses, pole barns
- Radiant heated slabs
👉 Why it works:
- 25 PSI handles typical slab loads
- Very low water absorption (~0.3%)
🧱 2. Foundation walls (interior + exterior)
- Basement foundation insulation
- Crawl space walls
- Exterior foundation perimeter
👉 Especially strong here because:
- XPS doesn’t degrade in damp soil conditions
- Keeps consistent R-value over time
🧱 3. Cavity wall insulation
- Commercial masonry cavity walls
- Brick veneer assemblies
- Backup wall systems
👉 Acts as:
- Continuous insulation layer
- Moisture barrier between wythes
🧱 4. Exterior continuous insulation (CI)
- Behind cladding (metal panels, siding, stucco systems)
- Steel stud wall systems
👉 Why contractors use it:
- Improves thermal performance (cuts thermal bridging)
- Durable enough for typical wall loads
🧱 5. Basement rim joists / band boards
- Cut and fit into rim joists
- Air seal with spray foam
👉 Common in residential retrofits:
- Easy to cut
- Good R-value (~R-10 at 2”)
🧱 6. Underlayment & specialty uses
Not its primary intent, but often used for:
- Under pavers or patios (light load)
- Under pool bases (with proper load distribution)
- Temporary jobsite insulation

How do I install XPS on my basement wall?
- You can glue or fasten the board to the concrete wall. When applying the glue, place a minimum of 5 large sections of glue in the 4 corners and one in the center. Install the board to the wall and apply pressure until the glue holds tight. You can find compatible adhesives in our TB11. Kingspan recommends Loctite Power Grab Adhesive.
- You can fasten the board to the wall with 5 Plasti-Grip PMF Anchors from TRUFAST.
- Apply common spray foam to the top and bottom to provide an airtight seal around the XPS board.
- XPS must be covered by a code approved thermal barrier such as drywall. This is for occupied spaces.
How do I protect the above grade portion of the XPS on my foundation?
There are many commercially available options that are provided by others. You can install a PVC, fiber cement or stucco coating to protect the XPS board.
What about mold, mildew, and insects?
GreenGuard extruded polystyrene (XPS) foam insulation and building wraps are made of synthetic materials that are generally recognized as not providing a food source for insects, fungus, mold, or mildew. GreenGuard building materials should always be properly installed and stored.
Does your XPS foam rot?
No, XPS foam does not rot. XPS foam is designed to be used behind walls and below grade, not as an exterior finish. It will eventually deteriorate with prolonged exposure to the sun, so it needs to be covered with a cladding.
